What is Cranberry?

Cranberries are, surprise, surprise a berry from the Ericaceae family. Its Latin name is the Vaccinium macrocarpon.

The fruit grows on a plant with creeping stems. From this buds a crimson berry. The plant is native to Canada and Northern-central America where it is known by two different names, the Vaccinium oxycoccus and macrocarpon respectively.

The Cranberry was a staple item amongst Native Americans in the 1500s. It was harvested for food, drink and therapeutic benefits. The Cranberry used to be served as a compact nutritional food supplement during the winter months to provide essential nutrients.

Health benefits of Cranberry

Cranberries are a fruit rich in dietary fibre, manganese, potassium, iron, magnesium, vitamin C, B6 and K. The main active bio compound in the berry is called a proanthocyanidin. This is a natural chemical compound that provides colour, promotes cell integrity and reduces oxidation which can cause disease.

●  Vitamin C is an antioxidant which helps to regenerate other antioxidants such as Vitamin E. Also, it promotes immune health and reduces fatigue.

●  Vitamin K aids the blood clotting process to prevent excessive bleeding and aid wound healing. Moreover, it contributes to the maintenance of bone health through the absorption of Calcium.

●  Potassium is an electrolyte that contributes to muscle function, the nervous system and promotes a healthy low blood pressure.

Although it is not an approved health claim, studies have shown that cranberry supplements can reduce the number of urinary tract infections (UTI) and prevent the onset of a UTI. This is thought to be due to the proanthocyanidin and D-mannose content of the natural berry.
